Indian festival to spotlight Iranian cinema

Iranian cinema is under the spotlight in an upcoming film festival to be held in India.

The 1st edition of the Guwahati International Film Festival (GIFF) will review Iranian cinema in a special section titled ‘Contemporary Iranian Cinema’.

Selected Iranian feature films to be shown at the Indian event include ‘Parting’, a joint production of Iran and Afghanistan by Navid Mahmoudi, and ‘Valderama’ by Abbas Amini.

‘Parting’ chronicles the story of two young Afghans in love, Fereshteh and Nabi. Fereshteh has to follow her parents and leave Afghanistan to find refuge in Iran. Nabi decides to illegally cross the border, find Fereshteh and take her through Turkey towards Europe and a better life.

Meanwhile, ‘Valderama’ is about an Iranian boy in the southwestern city of Abadan whose conspicuous curly blond hair resembles the famous Colombian former football player Carlos Valderama, so he is called by the same name. He is trying to obtain the ID card he has never been able to have.

The GIFF will also screen a large number of films from 35 countries, including Turkey, Estonia, Croatia, Czech, the U.S., Japan, Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, France, Denmark, Poland, Slovenia, Switzerland and Peru.

The 1st edition of the Guwahati International Film Festival will be held from October 28 to November 2.
